Immediate Safety Escalation

Escalate immediately if:

  • A worker is seriously injured or needs emergency response

  • There is a major release of a hazardous substance

  • There is a structural collapse or other serious event

Employers must immediately notify WorkSafeBC for certain incidents. If you think it qualifies, escalate right away. (worksafebc.com)

Working Alone After Hours

If you are working alone or in isolation, BC requires a check-in procedure:

  • A person must be designated to contact the worker at predetermined intervals

  • The results must be recorded

  • A check at the end of shift must be done

  • The interval procedure must be developed in consultation with the joint committee or worker rep, and consultation with the worker assigned to work alone is required for the interval selection (worksafebc.com)

RedBlue after-hours rule: do not start a lone assignment without a check-in plan.

After Hours Steps

If it is an emergency

  1. Call 911

  2. Make the scene safe if possible

  3. Notify supervisor and RedBlue leadership contact

  4. Document basic facts once safe

If it is urgent but not 911

  1. Call supervisor

  2. Call dispatch if it impacts scheduling or access

  3. Capture photos if safe

  4. Submit the appropriate report next

If it is non-urgent

  • Add notes and photos

  • Submit a hazard or near miss report next business day

Emergency Planning

WorkSafeBC guidance emphasizes training all workers in emergency response procedures, including temporary and part-time workers. (worksafebc.com)

RedBlue standard is:

  • Know the site muster point

  • Know who is first aid

  • Know the after-hours escalation chain
